Subject: [DVOC] FYI - Google AdSense on DVOC.org
Message-ID:
There is no council action necessary on this matter. This is for information
only.
1. Any new revenue for the club is a good thing. No matter how small. We
always need to be looking for new revenue sources
2. Having advertisements on a DVOC publication is not a new idea. At one
time Larus included advertisements.
http://www.dvoc.org/Publications/Larus/LarusArchives/LarusVol29_No1.pdf
This was discontinued because it was too much hassle for the editor. The
hassle was in chasing down the copy, getting payment, etc.
3. Google runs a program that puts ads on a website. These are targeted ads,
meaning they relate to your web site content. The owner of the website gets
money if people click on the ads. If no one clicks on the ads we get
nothing. People do not need to purchase anything, they just have to click on
the ads.
4. You have probably seen these ads in many places on the web. They are all
text ads and take up limited space. An example of the Google program can be
seen at http://birdingonthe.net/
I have contacted with the webmaster of this site (Jack Siler, club member)
and gotten his thoughts and comments on this.
5. This matter has been discussed by the officers and there is a general
agreement (general, but not unanimous) that we should put proceed with the
Google AdSense program on the Delaware Valley RBA page.
6. We may decide at some point to add the program other pages on the
website, but never the main or index page.
7. If this does not work out for us we can easily discontinue the program.
The obvious question is "How much can we expect?"
There is no answer to that. But it is important that we think small (real
small), not large.
Maybe this will not work out, maybe it won't, but we are going to give it a
try.

March 14 (Sunday) MIDDLE CREEK WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA, PA
Date Change! Birder reports, internet posts, and a scouting trip have
revealed that the area remains mostly frozen over. The trip is postponed
until Sunday March 14th. We will spend the afternoon into dusk. This will
allow birding the ponds, woodland edges, and fields while we experience the
evening fly-in of Snow Geese from nearby fields to their night roost in the
reservoir.
Meeting Place: Middle Creek Visitor?s Center on Museum Road in the Wildlife
Management area
Meeting time: 1:00pm
MARCH 27 (Saturday) ? PINELANDS BIRDING, FRANKIN PARKER PRESERVE, NJ
Franklin Parker Preserve is a relatively new reserve made up of old
cranberry bogs and pinelands. New Jersey Conservation Foundation's Emile De
Vito will meet us in Chatsworth and guide us through this preserve, we will
actually be able to drive through the reserve instead of the usual very long
hike one needs to do to explore this gem. Franklin Parker Preserve is a
really unique piece of habitat. This location came to be known in birding
circles for its late summer gull-billed terns and a northern shrike that
spent a few weeks there two winters ago. The reserve hosts tundra swans,
rough-legged hawks, harriers and bald eagles in the winter, some of which
will hopefully still be around. We may also be treated to pipit, Savanna
sparrows and merlin. You never know what will turn up in a spot like this.
We will meet at the Chatsworth Firehouse (corner of 563 and 532) at 9:00am
and carpool into the reserve. After we are done in Franklin Parker Preserve
we will try a reliable red-headed woodpecker location in the pinelands, or
even go to Tuckerton in time allows.
This DVOC trip is free to members and non-members.

Subject: [DVOC] Rare Bird Alert - Tufted Duck - Chester County, PA
Message-ID:
A Tufted Duck was found today in northern Chester County, PA
>From the PA Birds list serve
" At about noon today Holly Merker found a female TUFTED DUCK in northern
Chester County. Here are the directions:
From the PA turnpike take route 100 north through the town of Eagle.
Pass Park Road (which would take you to Marsh Creek, but don't go there).
In about 0.5 miles turn right on Fellowship Road from route 100. At this
intersection there is a traffic light, a Lexus dealership, and a large
Catholic Church. In less than 0.5 miles, look for a large circular gravel
parking lot on the left side of Fellowship Road. Park there. You are
overlooking some sewage ponds. The female Tufted Duck has been on the
closest pond to the gravel lot.
She has a well-developed tuft that is usually visible.
These directions were given to me over the phone by Chuck Chalfant.
They may need to be refined later today, but I think that they will get you
there.
Good luck,
BOB SCHUTSKY"

Announcing the 2010 Conservation Grant Recipient!
This year, 2010, DVOC is thrilled to support the BIRD-SAFE GLASS PROJECT OF
JOHN HEINZ NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE AT TINICUM.
Through this grant DVOC will partner with John Heinz National
Wildlife Refuge and PA Audubon to stimulate public awareness of window
strikes and create more demand for window solutions. This will be
accomplished through a demonstration project at the Wildlife Center. The
center receives 125,000 visitors per year, providing excellent opportunities
for education of the public.
All funds raised by the DVOC's 2010 World Series of Birding Team
will be awarded to John Heinz NWR. If necessary, the Refuge will match our
funds up to $3,000 providing sufficient seed money for the project. The
project will present visitors with a variety of effective solutions for
window and building glass. The displays will demonstrate the use of
different materials for different window applications. Additionally,
graphics will demonstrate the dynamics of window strikes, benefits and
limitations of specific solutions and relative costs. Visitors will be able
to observe firsthand the look and feel of bird safe solutions. Printed
literature will also be available for visitors to take home.
The Nikon / DVOC's Lagerhead Shrike team members are experts in
the game of "hit and run" birding. Nine times in the twenty six years of the
competition a DVOC team has won the grand prize - the Urner Stone Cup
(highest total species identified). The Lagerhead Shrikes do their part; now
it is YOUR turn. In order to support this worthy conservation project, we
need everyone's support in the form of pledges and contributions. A copy of
our 2010 WSB pledge form is available here -
http://www.dvoc.org/WSB/WSB2010/2010WSB_PledgeForm.pdf
Please be generous in support of our conservation projects. And give or send
a copy of this form to a friend!
Announcing the 2010 Lagerhead Shrikes and Announcing Their Blog
The team is happy to welcome back long-time captain Paul Guris,
after being sidelined by illness last year. Paul, Mike Fritz, Bert Filemyr
and Zack Baer are as determined as ever to continue and build on past
successes in finding species and raising funds for conservation.
New this year is a blog for the 2010 Lagerhead Shrikes -
http://nikondvoc.blogspot.com/ For those who the term "blog" means little
or nothing, let us explain what it is. A blog is an on-line journal that
contains postings from team members and others. Between now and the event
there will be postings about scouting, planning and execution. It is a way
for the team to let people know what goes on behind the scenes. Check the
blog often for information about our team!
Upcoming Meeting
This Thursday - April 1, 2010 - Held at the Academy of Natural Sciences in
Philadelphia
Check www.dvoc.org for full details
Bud Cook, "Birds of the Boreal Barrens of Northeast Pennsylvania"
The Pocono plateau in northeastern Pennsylvania embodies the region's boreal
heritage, harboring species tolerant to cooler temperatures reminiscent of
its glacial past. It is a vast landscape of glacial till barrens
interspersed with swamps, bogs, marshes and shallow ponds surrounded by red
spruce, balsam fir and eastern hemlock - woodlands more characteristic of
Canada's northern climate. The bird life has a decidedly northern flavor,
including many species that are rare or absent elsewhere in the state. Bud
Cook, Director of The Nature Conservancy's Northeastern Pennsylvania Office,
will describe the three major barrens sites in the region: Long Pond, Moosic
Mountain, and Arbutus Peak. They have many similarities, but each has its
own distinctive features, its own rarities. Each has public access, trails
and great birding. The Nature Conservancy and other organizations have been
actively conserving and managing habitat at each place.

with the Big Guys".

Congratulations to Alan Brady
The club congratulates Honorary Member Alan Brady on his recent 90th
birthday!
An Added Field Trip
A field trip has been added to our 2010 schedule. On April 25th DVOC members
have been invited to tour Rushton Farm Preserve, and witness in action their
newly-established Banding Station, the launching of which was significantly
supported by DVOC's 2009 Conservation funds last year. Further details are
on the 2010 Field Trip Page -
http://www.dvoc.org/FieldTrips/FieldTrips2010/FieldTrips2010.htm

He joined the club in 1939 and was a Fellow and Life Member.
At the time of his passing he had been a club member for 71 years. Frank was
on the faculty at Haverford College and led the Sunday May bird walks there
for many years.
>From the Philadelphia Inquirer March 25, 2010
"Franklin Howard West, 88, of Gwynedd, a retired psychiatrist, died of heart
failure March 11 at home.
Dr. West graduated from Lower Merion High School, earned a bachelor's degree
from Dartmouth College and a medical degree from the University of
Pennsylvania, and interned at a military hospital on Long Island, N.Y.,
while serving in the Navy.
After completing his training in psychiatry at the Institute of the
Pennsylvania Hospital in West Philadelphia, he remained on the staff there
for more than 40 years, retiring in 1990. He was also affiliated with
Hahnemann University Hospital.
Dr. West loved the arts, especially opera and the Philadelphia Orchestra,
said his wife, Margot.
He was most comfortable out in nature, stargazing, bird watching and bird
calling in Cape May, digging in his garden and giving tours of it, and
visiting gardens around the world, his wife said. He was coeditor of Hybrids
and Hybridizers: Rhododendron and Azaleas for Eastern North America.
An accomplished photographer, Dr. West documented his children's growing up
with slides and home movies. His black Labrador, Melody, was his constant
companion, his wife said.
Dr. West is also survived by sons Thomas and David; daughters Catherine
Greer, Janet Wood, and Frances; three stepchildren; 10 grandchildren; and a
great-grandson."
