If the flock hasn't been located then this trip will end at Jake's Landing for the Short-eared Owl show. This trip will meet at noon. We will choose our itinerary and meeting place after the CBC's. This will give us a chance to chase whatever else is around before completing the day with the dusk activity of the cranes and or owls. A Call For Photographs A Message from Lillian Armstrong - Director of Birding and Wildlife Trails, NJ Audubon The "Pine Barrens and Beyond Birding and Wildlife Trails" are going into the production phase, so we are collecting digital images of all manner of wildlife, both flora and fauna, as well as scenic shots. We will be publishing three new brochures, one for Burlington, one combining Camden and Gloucester, and one for Atlantic. Of course, the area goes well beyond the Pine Barrens itself, from Palmyra and Riverwinds to Forsythe and Ventnor. All photos have to be 300 dpi in the size they will be used. And remember, we pull out great photos of species that have very clean outlines to use as cut-outs in our design -- everything from insects to mammals and plants. For the most part, these photos have to be able to scale up to a reasonably large size at 300 dpi. Photographers are welcome to flag candidates for those. Potential cover photos will have to be stunning, representative of the specific county and high res at 4"W x 9"H. Photos received by January 15th will have a higher probability of being used, but we will consider photos through the first week of February. Further information is available from Lillian Armstrong - lillian.armstrong at njaudubon.org Upcoming Meeting January 21, 2010 - Held at the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia Check www.dvoc.org for full details Program : Adrian Binns, "The Naked Safari: Tales of East Africa" Join DVOC favorite Adrian Binns for humorous stories from his birding and wildlife tours in East Africa. Renowned for its peerless concentrations of wildlife, there is an extraordinary diversity of birds and mammals that make this part of Africa truly remarkable. There is so much more than just seeing the big 5 and saying you have been on safari. Come prepared for encounters and stories from the world's most famous wildlife sanctuaries. 2010 Annual Dues The 2010 dues notices have been sent to all members who owe annual dues for 2010. Also we ask that you consider donating to the Conservation Fund and to the Witmer Stone Sanctuary Initiative when you pay your dues. A Doc LaVia Memorial Endowment has been established to continue his legacy. The Endowment was established to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Doc's passing and will distribute annual funds to the English Department to enhance the teaching of literature. The Endowment will be maintained as a segregated fund, and is open to contributions, both in cash and in securities. Contributions can be sent to the Doc LaVia Memorial Endowment, Doane Academy, 350 Riverbank, Burlington, NJ 08016. Upcoming Field Trips February 7 (Sunday) - MANAHAWKIN WMA, NJ The dead of winter is a splendid time to spend in salt marshes. Sometimes the "Bridge to Nowhere" is a stop on a return trip from Barnegat Light, however this spot is definitely worth a trip of its own to discover what treasures it may contain. The "Bridge to Nowhere" is a bridge at the end of a newly paved road that was once supposed to lead to a failed development. This spot is notorious for Short-eared Owls and Rough-legged Hawks and has had Sedge Wren. We will also visit nearby Cedar Run Dock Road which is less wild but has access to Barnegat Bay. This is also a good spot for short-ears and rough-legs as well as diving ducks and grebes, this spot has held Red-necked Grebe before. We will meet at the Stafford Diner on route 72 and Mermaid Drive, next to Wawa at noon. This trip is timed for Short-eared Owls at dusk; those who want to bird the whole day can do Brig or Barnegat Light in the morning. There will be a pre-trip to Barnegat we will meet at 8:30 at the Barnegat State Park parking lot. This DVOC trip is free to members and non-members. Leader: Tony Croasdale February 13-15 (Saturday - Monday) - EASTERN ONTARIO A 3 day trip over President's weekend to look for winter finches, raptors and owls. In Algonquin we hope for crossbills, redpolls, Pine Grosbeak, Boreal Chickadee, Gray Jay, Black-backed Woodpecker and Spruce Grouse, while in the south the woods and fields should hold Saw-whet, Long-eared, Short-eared and Snowy Owl. If they are around we'll also search for Boreal, Great Gray and Hawk Owl. Quality, not quantity! Limited registration. This is a shared expenses trip open to members and non-members. The final cost for each participant will be determined by expenses incurred Leader: Win Shafer February 15 (Monday) - NORTH SHORE, NJ We will hit the North Shore region of New Jersey for wintering birds. This area includes some great ocean overlooks and fantastic ponds that attract a great variety of wintering birds. We will spend time scanning the ocean and hitting the ponds to see what waterfowl is around. This trip will go in most any weather conditions except for unsafe driving conditions. If any doubt, please call me the day before. Dress in layers and be prepared for most any weather from salt spray, to strong winds, to well below freezing temps, to rain. We will have many opportunities for bathroom breaks and buying and eating meals. This area has produced a variety of rarities in the past depending on weather and the movements of the birds. We will chase any known rarities and hopefully find one or two of our own. Birds such as Snowy Owl, Common Redpoll, Little Gull, Black-headed Gull, Razorbill, Pacific Loon, Western Grebe, and Eurasian Wigeon have all been seen in the area in various years. We will meet at the south side Shark River Inlet ocean overlook at 10:30AM. Directions: Here's how I go from south Jersey. Take Rt. 295 north to Rt. 195 east. Go to the end. You are now on Rt. 138. Take this to the end. Merge onto Rt. 35 north. Continue on Rt. 35 north to 10th St. Turn right - east - and continue to the "T" intersection at the ocean. Turn left - north - and continue until you come to the drawbridge over the inlet. Do NOT cross the drawbridge. Park where available and join me at the jetty. Any questions, call Sandra Keller at (856)383-2756. Leader: Sandra Keller Correction to the 2010 DVOC Membership Directory A significant mistake was made in both the printed directory and the "green" version. The Secretary for 2010 is Bob Horton, not the person who is listed. Bert Filemyr, who produced the directory, apologizes for the error. Looking for an Address If anyone has a current address for member Dr. Frank Spitzer please pass it on to directory at dvoc.org. The one in the 2010 Directory appears to be out of date.
