Upcoming Meeting
Thursday May 7, 7:30 pm at the Academy of Natural Sciences
Chris Lotz, "Birding the Southern Third of Africa from Cape Town to Victoria
Falls and Namibia"
Chris will take us on a journey from the southern tip of Africa through
extremely diverse birding habitats across 7 very different countries. He
will show photos which give just a taste of some of the birds (plus other
wildlife and scenery) you will encounter as you travel through South Africa
and then northwards along the Namib Escarpment to the great Zambezi River,
the Okavango and beyond to lesser-known but spectacularly bird-rich areas.
Chris will give us an impression of what it's like to bird this incredible
part of the world.

A Deceased Club Member is Being Honored
On Saturday, May 9, at 10 am, the East Pool at the Edwin B Forsythe NWR at
Brigantine will be officially dedicated and renamed in memory of John
Danzenbaker. The ceremony will be held roughly midpoint along the East
dike, and vehicles will probably caravan from the Visitors' Center. It
should run less than an hour (just guessing; perhaps less than half an
hour). Refreshments will be provided afterwards at the Visitors' Center.
All are welcome to attend.
More information about this distinguished member is available at
http://www.dvoc.org/Personnel/DanzenbakerJ.htm
A Publication by a Club Member
Club member Elizabeth J. Rosenthal has recently written an article on the
Birdfellow birding blog about the red knot and horseshoe crab situation in
the Delaware Bay? It can be found at: http://www.birdfellow.com/
New Cassinia editor sought
Art McMorris will be stepping down as Cassinia editor once issues #71 and
#72 are completed. Therefore Council is looking for suggestions for a new
editor to begin with issue #73, which will cover the calendar years
2008-2009. Please send names to Art, who will forward them to Council for
their action .
Big Day Reports
Doing a Big Day in May has been a tradition at DVOC. Get together with some
friends, pick a single 24-hour day, a birding location, and see how many
species of birds you can find. Afterwards, download the DVOC Big Day Report
Form, fill it out, and submit your results to Frank Windfelder. If you wish,
come to the June 4th DVOC meeting and tell us about it in person. This
includes teams participating in the New Jersey World Series of Birding"
Upcoming Field Trips
May 8 (Friday) - TURKEY POINT for NIGHTBIRDS and RAILS, NJ
New in 2009 - Rescheduled from earlier
Many of the details about this trip have yet to be finalized. Our objective
is to do some night birding and listen to calling rails and other marsh
birds that are primarily active at night. The tentative itinerary is to meet
at Turkey Point in the early evening and listen for rails, with the
objective of hearing Yellow Rail. Other target birds include Black Rail,
Sora, King Rail and Clapper Rail. This is a change of venue from previous
years' trips to the C&D Canal in Delaware. Details for the trip will be
finalized well in advance of the May 2 scheduled date. In case of bad
weather that would make listening for rails difficult, the trip will be
rescheduled. Please make all efforts to contact Steve Kacir if you plan on
attending.
(This DVOC trip is free to members and non-members.)

(WEEKDAYS)
We will bird the most likely spots on the way up on Wednesday (bring your

species nesting including Bald Eagle and Woodcock. We will dine there on
Wednesday night and then look for owls at dusk. We will have breakfast in
our cabin the following morning and hike the preserve looking for warblers
along a premier trout stream. We will again bird targets of opportunity on
our way back Thursday arriving home late in the evening. The cost is
$130/person double occupancy. This includes van or SUV transportation
depending on numbers, dinner on Wednesday night and breakfast Thursday

(This a special offer and a private opportunity for DVOC members. All
arrangements are being made by Phil Witmer and Greystone Preserve. There is
a fee for this trip which is not set by DVOC. If the trip is not filled by
