This is supposedly a resident flock although no one seems to know where they breed. It is extremely interesting because a Common Crane and several hybrid offspring are part of this group of 18 birds. If the flock hasn't been located then this trip will end at Jake's Landing for the Short-eared Owl show. This trip will meet at noon. We will choose our itinerary and meeting place after the CBC's. This will give us a chance to chase whatever else is around before completing the day with the dusk activity of the cranes and or owls. This trip will likely produce large numbers of Snow Geese, maybe even a Ross's or Greater White-fronted Goose, harriers and Bald Eagles. Meet at the parking lot on the south side of the main lake at 9:00AM. Dress warmly; bring scope and binoculars for fairly rewarding, close-up views. Leader: Colin Campbell February 8 (Sunday) - MANAHAWKIN WMA, NJ New in 2009 The dead of winter is a splendid time to spend in salt marshes. Sometimes the "Bridge to Nowhere" is a stop on a return trip from Barnegat Light, however this spot is definitely worth a trip of its own to discover what treasures it may contain. The "Bridge to Nowhere" is a bridge at the end of a poorly maintained dirt road that was once supposed to lead to a failed development. This spot is notorious for Short-eared Owls and Rough-legged Hawks and has had Sedge Wren. We will also visit nearby Cedar Run Dock Road which is better maintained, less wild but has access to Barnegat Bay. This is also a good spot for short-ears and rough-legs as well as diving ducks and grebes, this spot has held Red-necked Grebe before. We will meet at the Stafford Diner on route 72 and Mermaid Drive, next to Wawa at noon. This trip is timed for Short-eared Owls at dusk; those who want to bird the whole day can do Brig or Barnegat Light in the morning. Do we listen to our gut reaction that something isn't right and verify our initial impressions, or do we let it go?? What should we do as birders? Texas offers birders a chance to be truly baffled by some unusual combinations of species from east, west, north, and south, often at unusual seasons. Mary will talk about some serious identification challenges she sees every winter, and will likely rant and rave about care, caution, and looking twice at birds. Malcolm Gladwell's book "Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking" describes how we glance at a bird and can put a name to it. Mary will encourage us to go one more step and look again - to be sure we're right. The open water is currently hosting 2 pairs of Redheads, along with Ring-Necked Ducks, Bufflehead, Wigeon, Shoveler, Gadwall, Coot, etc. We'll look for Cackling Goose among hundreds of Canada's. After spending about 45-60 minutes, we'll drive to Darlington Tract in Delaware County, to look for the LeConte's Sparrow, which was seen this morning. For those who want to meet us directly at Darlington, we'll plan to be there around 10:30 am. Directions to Darlington Tract, from Rte 476. Take exit #5 onto Route 1 south. Follow for several miles past the Granite Run Mall in Media. After the Franklin Mint and WaWa Corporate Headquarters (both on left), turn right onto Darlington Road. About one-mile down the road there is a right-hand pull-off into a small parking lot. Follow the foot trail out the northwest side of the lot. Trails are icy and slippery, wear appropriate footwear. Our group will try to consolidate cars at the Granite Run Mall, as the parking area is not large, and road-side parking is not available.
