A Golfer, a Golf Ball, and a Red-shouldered Hawk
This past week there was a disturbing event on a golf course during the
taping of a TV show. Pro golfer Tripp Isenhour intentionally drove golf
balls at a Red-shouldered Hawk. He was successful in hitting and killing the
hawk. The golfer now faces criminal charges
Information is available at multiple web locations. Enter "golfer
red-shouldered hawk" in any web search engine for further information.

excellent photographers. All members are encouraged to send pictures to
webmaster at dvoc.org for use on the website. Several members maintain on-line
accounts where they post their pictures. If you post to an on-line account
please let the webmaster know so a link from the DVOC site can be set up.

Upcoming Field Trips: (Details and directions at <http://www.dvoc.org>
www.dvoc.org under "Field Trips")
(Rescheduled again) March 16 (Sunday) Photography Trip at Barnegat
Lighthouse, Barnegat NJ
This field trip will focus on getting some good photographs of wintering
gulls and waterfowl at Barnegat Light. Almost no effort will be made to find
rarities. Well plan to walk the jetty, find cooperative birds and
photograph them. Target birds include Red-throated Loons, Common Loon,
Long-tailed Ducks, Scoters, Purple Sandpipers, Eiders, Snow Buntings and
Ipswich Sparrow -- basically whatever we find. Whether you're new to
photography or a pro, you're welcome on this trip. I will be shooting almost
exclusively with a Digital SLR and 300mm lens. Digiscopers and more
traditional photographers are both welcome, and we'll do our best to find
some subjects for everyone. If interested, contact Steve Kacir and let him
know whether you'll be digiscoping or just using a camera. Some information
about your lens will also help in planning our approach to this trip. In
case of foul weather the trip will be rescheduled.
Field Trip meeting place: Lighthouse Parking Lot

DVOC Dues - Second Notice Mailed
DVOC yearly dues were due in January. A second notice has been mailed to
club members who have not paid yet. If you have not paid, prompt attention
to this matter is appreciated.
Upcoming Meeting (Details and directions at <http://www.dvoc.org/>
www.dvoc.org)
Thursday March 20, 7:30 pm, at the Academy of Natural Sciences, Philadelphia
PA
Program - Jeff Gordon - " iBird: Digital Technology vs. Natural History"
Many people think that one of the most valuable things about birdwatching is
that it offers a chance to "unwire," to escape from things man-made into a
more natural, authentic state. How does this notion fare in the days of
iPods, laptops, and camera phones? What are the challenges and opportunities
we all face as unprecedented power to collect and share information combines
with increasing usage demands on decreasing natural areas?
While Jeff doesn't pretend to have all the answers to these questions, he
does have a good deal of experience with birds, birders, and digital
doodads. Join him for a conversation about the state of our art.
