DVOC Picnic - Sunday August 3

Come join your DVOC friends for an afternoon of fellowship and fun!

Jan Gordon is hosting the picnic at her wonderful home on Sunday August 3,
2008.  Frank Windfelder and Chris Walters are co-chairing the event.

A New Field Trip 

A new field trip has been added to our already extensive schedule.

September 19-21 (Friday - Sunday) - Pocono Environmental Education Center,
Dingman's Ferry, PA

We will travel up to Pocono Environmental Education Center (PEEC) and arrive
for dinner around 6. There can be a social hour which would require you to
BYOB after dinner. 

Birding will begin on Saturday and we will bird all day. Looking for fall
warblers and even taking a trip over to Sunrise Mountain for observing
migrating raptors. We will have all of our meals at PEEC's new
environmentally friendly dining hall. Sunday will consist of birding all
morning then coming back for lunch and checkout. There is a charge for the
event and will be around $90 a person, which will include 6 meals and two
nights lodging on PEEC's campus.

We need 10 people to sign up for this trip. Contact trip leader James

August 7th Meeting Alert

Author Elizabeth Rosenthal who is scheduled to speak about her book
"Birdwatcher: The Life of Roger Tory Peterson" at the August 7th meeting,
has an article in the July/August 2008 Birdwatcher's Digest. The article,
like her book, is about Roger Tory Peterson.

 

Two Alerts for the September 4th Meeting 

#1 The September 4th informal summer meeting will be held at The Silver Lake
Nature Center in Bristol, PA

The address is 1306 Bath Rd., Bristol, PA. The web site is

>From I-95 go to exit 40 (Bristol Rt. 413).  At the end of the ramp, turn
left.  At second light turn right onto ford rd.  At the T-intersection, turn
right onto Bath Rd. At the first light, Bath rd. turns to the right and the
Nature Center is 1/4 mile on left.

 

>From PA turnpike go to the last or first exit in PA Exit 358 and take Rt. 13
south to the second traffic light and turn right onto Bath Rd. The Building
is 3/4 miles on the right.

 

>From Rt. 13 travelling to the north, go to the second light past Rt. 413.
You cannot make a left, but must use the jug handle around the Golden Eagle
Diner which will put you on Bath Rd. going in the correct direction. The
Building is 3/4 miles on the right.


#2 - Vice President and program director Frank Windfelder is looking for a
couple of short presentations for the September 4th informal meeting.

Upcoming Field Trip                                  

August 9 (Saturday) - Shorebirds at Green Lane Reservoir, Montgomery County,
PA 

Join Steve Kacir on his Montgomery County Big Year for shorebirds at Green
Lane Reservoir. This is one of the best locations in eastern PA for
shorebirds. This will 

probably be a half day trip. However, if any participants want to continue
to bird Montgomery County through the day with me, they will be welcome.
Meeting Time: 7:00am Meeting Place: Church Rd Parking Lot at Green Lane
Reservoir

Directions: From the Northeast Extension of I-476, take Exit 44 for PA 663
towards Quakertown/Pottstown. Take PA 663 South towards Pottstown. PA 663
starts as John Fries Hwy and becomes Pottstown Ave. Turn right onto
Schoolhouse Rd. Turn left onto Church Rd. Follow Church Rd for less than a
mile. Immediately before the intersection of Church Rd and Hock Rd, turn
left into the 

parking area that borders Green Lane Reservoir. If you get to Kutztown Rd,
you have gone too far.

Northern Saw-whet Owl Research Opportunities

The following two job listings are from Scott Weidensaul (via club member
Phil Witmer). The work being done by Scott Weidensaul is being supported by
conservation funds raised by the club this year.

 

Seasonal technician position for ongoing research on northern saw-whet owl
in Pennsylvania.

 

Description: Long-term study (entering its 12th year) examining migration
and stopover of northern saw-whet owls in the Appalachians of southcentral
Pennsylvania. Coordinated by Ned Smith Center for Nature and Art,
Millersburg, PA; for more information see www.nedsmithcenter.org.

 

Primary responsibility: Radio telemetry study focusing primarily on
determining nighttime activity ranges of owls, as well as some location of
daytime roost sites. Primary study site is Michaux State Forest, PA.

Candidate must be comfortable working at night in mountainous terrain, alone
or with a small crew of volunteers. 

Candidate will locate and follow owls to determine activity ranges, collect
vegetative and landscape data, and perform data entry, under supervision of
project coordinator. In addition, will work closely with seasonal research
intern.

 

BS degree or equivalent experience. Previous telemetry experience required,
although previous raptor tracking experience not necessary. 

Good physical condition required, including normal night-vision and ability
to navigate mountainous terrain in the dark, and under cold conditions.

Ability to work independently essential. Reliable field vehicle required;
4WD a plus but not required. Good map and GPS skills important as well as
good working knowledge of central Appalachian flora. Bird-banding experience
is a plus but not a requirement.

 

Employment dates approx. Sept. 15, 2008 - Jan. 15, 2009 (some flexibility
available on start/end dates). Monthly stipend of $2,250, and up to $2,000

Intern sought to assist large, volunteer-based research program conducting
banding and telemetry studies of northern saw-whet owls migrating through
central Pennsylvania. Successful candidate will work with field crews
mist-netting, banding and processing migrant owls; with telemetry crews
conducting daytime surveys of roost locations; and with research technician
to conduct nighttime monitoring of tagged owls to determine activity ranges.

Excellent opportunity to work with a large volunteer corps with varied
natural resource backgrounds. Banding sites are in Schuylkill, Dauphin and
Cumberland counties.

 

Candidates must be in good physical condition, comfortable working at night
and in the cold. Housing is not included; reliable vehicle required, but 4WD
not necessary. Stipend of $2,000 plus travel reimbursement up to $1,000.
