2008 Dues!
DVOC dues for 2008 are due. Annual dues are still only $25 and are quite a
bargain.
Plus for only $375, you can enjoy the benefits of membership for the rest of
your life and never have to write another check.......at least not for dues.
The $375 life membership is payable in three annual installments of $125
each? Why not start this year! Life membership monies are transferred to the
Club endowment and benefit the Club on a permanent basis.
To pay your dues, you can send in your payment now (all dues notices have
been mailed) or pay your dues in person at the 2/7 DVOC meeting
Make your check payable to "DVOC" and mailed to Bert Filemyr, DVOC
Treasurer, 1314 Lenore Road, Meadowbrook PA 19046
Dr. Jeff Wells's book is still available.
The club still has a couple of copies of "Birders Conservation Handbook: 100
North American Birds at Risk". We have arranged for a very special price of
on $25 per copy ($35 list price). Pick up a copy at the next meeting. Once
our supply is gone you will have to pay retail to get this outstanding book!
Vulture Roost
Club member Chuck Hetzel would like to bring everyone's attention to a major
vulture roost in Philadelphia. He reports "From 130 Spring Lane (where it
is dirt) in Philadelphia look SW just over the white farm house in the
trees. The vultures seem to congregate there in the late afternoon. My count
on the Philly Census was only 41 but I think there are more later in the
day. 3/4 of that number are Black Vultures."
Upcoming Meeting (Details and directions at <http://www.dvoc.org/>
www.dvoc.org)
Thursday February 7, 7:30 pm, at the Academy of Natural Sciences,
Philadelphia PA
Program - Nathan Gregory, a graduate student at Princeton University. -
"Impacts of Controlled Fires and Traditional Livestock Grazing on Bird
Communities in Kenya"
When many people think of East Africa, they think of savannas - open,
rolling grasslands with scattered trees and abundant wildlife. What they may
not realize is that savannas are the products of a long history of human
influence in the form of controlled fire and livestock grazing using bomas,
temporary thorn-scrub corrals.
Nathan has been investigating how the two components of traditional
pastoralism, fire and grazing using bomas, affect bird abundance, diversity,
and community composition. Pastoralism as a way of life is declining, and
this could have important consequences for conservation.
