DVOC members:
Don't miss Scott Weidensaul's presentation at DVOC on Thursday night! It should be special!
He will be speaking about his book, ?Of a Feather?
>From the moment Europeans arrived in North America, they were awestruck by a continent awash with birds - great flocks of wild pigeons, woodlands alive with brilliantly colored songbirds. Join naturalist and author Scott Weidensaul as he traces the unpredictable history of bird study in America, from frontier ornithologists (one of whom barely escaped pursuing Apaches with a precious hawk egg hidden in his mouth) to society matrons who organized the first effective conservation movement; from luminaries like Alexander Wilson (a convicted blackmailer) and Audubon (an accomplished liar) to modern geniuses like Roger Tory Peterson.
Also, the 2009 DVOC Conservation Award will be presented.
See you there!

Upcoming Meeting
This Thursday December 18th 7:30 pm at the Academy of Natural Sciences
Program - Annual DVOC Slide Contest
(The window for the submission of slides is now closed. No additional slides
will be accepted at the meeting)
There has been an overwhelming response to the DVOC Slide Contest. We have
accumulated a stunning array of photographs. Come and see the slides, and
relive the experience with the photographers.
Prizes will be awarded in four categories: Birds, Natural History (non-avian
fauna and flora), Scenery, and Birders.
The camaraderie should be great. Don't miss this one!
Cassinia On Line - A Major Club Initiative
Beginning at the time of the club's founding in 1890, DVOC has published on
a regular basis a journal of birding in the Delaware Valley area. The first
four volumes were titled "Abstract and Proceedings of the Delaware Valley
Ornithological Club". Beginning with Volume V the name of this publication
became "Cassinia". A total of 70 volumes have been issued. These volumes
contain historically significant information on birding in our area plus a
unique insight into our club. Many members have assembled collections of
Cassinia and several area libraries have sets. But these publications have
not been generally or easily available.
The DVOC is committed to making all volumes available on line. This is not a
project that will be completed in the next couple of weeks or even the next
couple of months. But the project has begun and the club is proud to
announce the posting of 5 volumes on the website. The club will be appealing
to club members for volumes for scanning to fill in some missing volumes in
the archives. More on this later.
The home page of this project is
http://www.dvoc.org/CassiniaOnLine/Index.htm
>From this page the individual volumes can be accessed. At the present time
the following five volumes are available:
Abstract of Proceedings Volume III 1898-99
Cassinia Volume XXIX 1931-32
Cassinia Volume XXXV 1945
Cassinia Volume 56 1976
Cassinia Volume 65 1992-1993
Club members and other interested parties are encouraged to make use of this
fascinating resource.
More will be posted as time and resources permit.
The DVOC webmaster (webmaster at dvoc.org) welcomes any thoughts or comments on
this project.
