The Delaware Valley Ornithological Club (DVOC) Weekly Update
Delaware Courts Overturn Horseshoe Crab Ban - submitted by Debbie Beer -
Conservation Chairperson
On June 8, 2007 the Delaware Superior Court ruled that the Delaware
Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control's 2-year
moratorium on horseshoe crab harvesting in Delaware is invalid. As a result
of the ruling, DNREC will develop emergency regulations for the 2007 season
based upon recommendations by the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries
Commission's Horseshoe Crab Management Board. The emergency regulations will
reduce Delaware's annual harvest quota from 150,000 horseshoe crabs of
either sex to 100,000 male-only horseshoe crabs. The emergency regulations
will take effect prior to the next horseshoe crab harvest day - Monday, June
11, 2007.
